Community Effort: IRS-Certified Volunteers Rally to Help Low-Income Workers Claim Tax Credits in Koreatown!

According to LA Times, last week in Koreatown, Sandy Huaman, a 35-year-old single mother and part-time hotel receptionist and server, attended a workshop where volunteer tax preparers helped her apply for tax credits. With their assistance, Huaman is now set to receive a refund for all the taxes deducted from her paycheck last year, amounting to around $4,000. This windfall will enable her to visit her ailing godmother in Peru and save the remainder.

Across Los Angeles County, hundreds of IRS-certified volunteers are aiding low- and moderate-income workers in filing their tax returns this season. These volunteers, supported by the city of L.A., the L.A. County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, and the Koreatown Youth + Community Center, aim to help eligible individuals reclaim some of the taxes they’ve paid. Central to this effort is the earned income tax credit, which offers much-needed financial relief to those living paycheck to paycheck.
