According to Finger Lakes1, a recent audit by California’s State Auditor has shed light on major problems with the Middle Class Tax Refund (MCTR) program. This initiative, aimed at helping Californians cope with inflation and high gas prices, has faced significant hurdles despite distributing over $9.2 billion in tax refunds. The audit revealed issues with customer service failures and raised concerns about fraud.

The MCTR program, proposed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2022, was intended to provide up to $1,050 to eligible residents. However, implementation problems arose, with many struggling to access funds through issued debit cards. The audit found that a staggering number of calls to the helpline went unanswered, leaving many without assistance.

Contract Controversy: Assemblymember Urges Reevaluation of Money Network Deal Amid Tax Refund Turmoil!

Furthermore, the audit highlighted concerns about fraud due to a lack of chip technology in many distributed debit cards. Criticism was also directed towards the payment structure of the contract with Money Network, the program’s operator. Assemblymember Jim Patterson has called for a reconsideration of the state’s relationship with Money Network, while the Franchise Tax Board works to address the issues uncovered by the audit. With over a million unactivated MCTR cards representing $611 million in payments, the board plans to send reminder letters to encourage activation and pledges to learn from these mistakes for future relief efforts.
