$600 CTC would help ease financial burdens

Dozens of lawmakers, together with child welfare advocates and families showed up to the press conference in support of making Connecticut child tax credit be permanent and fully refundable. According to NECN, the $600 credit per child would allow closing the gap on child poverty and creating a fair tax system. It would impact 75% of Connecticut families especially that 39% of families right now are not able to make ends meet, according to the Connecticut United Way.

A single parent named Jessica Chubbuch said that everything is going up except their wages. The $600 credit could be spent on groceries and gas. Another single mom, Jessica Vargas, said that she always needs to stretch her dollars, raising her kids on just one income.

Connecticut child tax credit lapse contributed to 7% increase in its child poverty

In a report from Connecticut Public, the Connecticut child tax credit provided tremendous family support but its lapse in 2021 contributed to a 7% increase in its child poverty. The temporary CTC gave low-income families a rebate of $250 per child up to three children in a family. These families used the funds for basic needs.

According to Senior Policy fellow at D.C., “Having a CTC, especially a fully refundable one, would give that influx of unrestricted cash that families can use to do whatever they feel is most important.” A reliable CTC would allow families to have the financial flexibility in which state and federal help are missing.
