Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Probes EBT Card Skimming: Over $14,000 in Losses, Expanding Investigation

In a recent development, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) has launched an investigation into a series of unauthorized transactions involving food stamp cards, commonly known as EBT cards, in the Lake Charles area. According to KATC, the investigation of EBT card skimming commenced on September 17, when CPSO Financial Crimes Detectives started receiving reports of fraudulent activity associated with these cards. Preliminary findings suggest that the EBT cards have been compromised using skimming devices installed at self-checkout stations in local grocery stores.

As of September 26, CPSO detectives have identified 29 victims of EBT card skimming who have collectively suffered losses exceeding $14,000 due to these unauthorized transactions. Additionally, it has come to light that there are more than 30 similar cases reported in the Oakdale area, further expanding the scope of this investigation.

Despite ongoing efforts, no arrests have been made.

Sheriff Urges SNAP EBT Beneficiaries to Change PINs Amid EBT Card Skimming Concerns, DCFS Offers Support

Sheriff Tony Mancuso has issued an urgent advisory to individuals and families receiving SNAP EBT benefits, urging them to change their PIN numbers immediately. The Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) has been proactive in notifying benefit holders about the whole “EBT card skimming” situation. However, not all households have taken the necessary action to safeguard their accounts. DCFS recommends constant vigilance by utilizing the LifeInCheck app or contacting the number provided on the back of the EBT card to monitor account activity.

CPSO Detective John Melton has been designated as the lead investigator for these cases, overseeing efforts to bring those responsible to justice. This “EBT card skimming” situation serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting sensitive financial information and promptly reporting any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
