California Reparation Task Force Plan Calls For An End To Child Support Debt

The California Reparations Task Force is calling on the Democratic-controlled state legislature to remove interest in overdue child support.

The Reparations Task Force cited a 2003 study that estimated that 27% of child support owed by the state was unpaid interest

The reparations task force document says black Californians make up a higher proportion of those who owe alimony than their share of the population in the state.

The Reparations Task Force also claimed that the 10% interest the state charges on child support “hinders” their ability to fund higher education, reparations task force pursue vocational training, find a job, and maintain housing. The Reparation Task Forces stated the legal consequences of not paying this debt.

The Reparations Task Force proposal recommends lawmakers end future interest in child support debt for low-income parents. The report is the culmination of a two-year investigation by the reparations task force examining the historical discrimination faced in the state by black people and their ancestors in California.

The reparations task force also provided a detailed account of how the state wronged the descendants of black slaves. The state legislature and the Reparations Task Force will now decide which parts of the report, including monetary compensation to black residents, will be approved or rejected.
