The administration of President Joe Biden this week announced that it plans to spend nearly $1 billion to expand internet access in rural areas.

White House announces plans to expand access to 35 states using mid-mile broadband infrastructure

This connects underserved areas to the national internet. The so-called intermediary subsidies, announced by the Commerce Department, are intended to create large-scale networks that allow retail broadband providers to connect subscribers to the Internet. Department officials compared the role of the middle mile – the middle part of the infrastructure needed to enable internet access, made up of high-capacity fiber optic lines.
