The bill kicked off at the JCAB meeting on Tuesday morning and ran through the late afternoon when a Panasonic project and two tax cuts suddenly surfaced on the revised agenda.

Lawmakers advanced the remainder of the 2024 state budget in a concurrent special session

The joint budget committee did not meet today as scheduled after Monday. Instead, lawmakers negotiated other deals in tense inter-legislative talks and negotiations with Gov. Kevin Stitt, including the abolition of the state franchise tax and a $145 million investment in site preparation to attract a Panasonic battery factory.

Lawmakers’ approval to provide additional funding for Panasonic’s project, on top of the $698 million in incentives already provided to the company.

The closing talk “works pretty much like the rest of the session”

Lawmakers initially tabled 46 bills by midnight Monday but the spate of last-minute fiscal stimulus offers further evidence that House and Senate leaders are at odds this year. The new funding is also being provided for the expansion of engineering courses. To achieve this goal lawmakers have suggested that the Department of Corrections. Juvenile Affairs and Rehabilitation allocate funds to increase the number of teachers.
