State income taxes in Oregon can now be filed electronically free of charge. A few days ago, the state’s Department of Revenue has already processed the 2022 tax returns.
On January 23, the Department of Revenue of Oregon announced that the state’s taxpayers can now file 2023 state income tax returns electronically free of charge. On the same day, the Oregon DOR has also begun processing the state tax returns as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has begun processing federal tax returns.According to Geschke, there are many filing options available for free on Oregon DOR’s website. Guided Tax Preparations are also available for free for taxpayers who qualify for the income requirements. On the other hand, if taxpayers do not qualify for the income requirements, they can still file for free. These taxpayers can use the state’s Free Fillable Forms.
Free Fillable Forms for those taxpayers who want to file electronically but no longer need assistance in preparing their tax returns. Comprehensive instructions on how to use the Free Fillable Forms can also be accessed on Oregon DOR’s electronic filing website.

Other Free Filing Options Available
An article in The Skanner News says that the IRS’s Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) also offer basic tax return preparations to eligible individuals for free. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the CASH (Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope) Oregon also offer preparation services for taxpayers who earn low to average income.
These days, electronic filing is the easiest way for a taxpayer to receive their tax refunds. Taxpayers who file their tax returns electronically and request for a direct deposit payment receive their refund approximately 34 days earlier. This is in comparison to taxpayers who file their tax returns by physically mailing them and opting for paper checks. The tax refunds are expected to be issued beginning on February 15.
