Social Security – Good news for California residents this week! A new CalFresh payment is on its way to eligible beneficiaries. CalFresh, California’s food assistance program, operates similarly to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in other states, with the aim of helping low-income households purchase nutritious food. This program provides assistance via an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used at participating grocery stores. However, it cannot be used for hot prepared foods, alcohol, vitamins, tobacco, pet food, household supplies, and non-food items.
When will CalFresh recipients receive their benefits in January 2025?
CalFresh payments are issued during the first 10 days of each month. The distribution date depends on the last digit of the recipient’s case number. Here is the schedule for January 2025:
- January 1st: Case number ends in 1
- January 2nd: Case number ends in 2
- January 3rd: Case number ends in 3
- January 4th: Case number ends in 4
- January 5th: Case number ends in 5
- January 6th: Case number ends in 6
- January 7th: Case number ends in 7
- January 8th: Case number ends in 8
- January 9th: Case number ends in 9
- January 10th: Case number ends in 0

How to Ensure Proper Use of CalFresh Benefits
It’s essential that recipients use their benefits at approved retailers and avoid non-approved purchases to ensure proper benefits allocation and avoid penalties.
How to Apply for CalFresh
If you’re interested in applying for CalFresh, you must meet specific eligibility requirements. You can apply:
- In person with any CalFresh Outreach partners
- Via a drop box at any DPSS District Office
- By mail to any nearby DPSS District Office
- By fax at (310) 215-8220
Additionally, if you need to contact CalFresh customer service, they are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm.
