First Round of January Social Security Payments to Arrive in 8 Days, Up to $4,873

Social Security  – Millions of Social Security recipients are set to receive their first monthly retirement checks of 2025 in just eight days.

Social Security beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of their birth month will receive their regular monthly payment on January 8, 2025, from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Social Security benefits are based on an individual’s lifetime earnings, with no income limits affecting the amount. However, the size of each check varies depending on the age at which a person retires. While citizens are eligible for Social Security at age 62, waiting until a later age can result in higher monthly payments. For example, those who retire at 67 receive up to $3,822 per month, while those who retire at 62 get a maximum of $2,710. Retirees who wait until age 70 can receive the highest monthly check of $4,873, according to the SSA.

The distribution of monthly Social Security payments follows a three-wave schedule, with checks being sent out on Wednesdays (or Tuesdays if a Wednesday falls on a federal holiday). The first wave for January payments will occur on January 8, for beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of the month. The second wave will be issued on January 15 for those born between the 11th and 20th, while the third and final wave will be on January 22 for those born between the 21st and 31st.

It’s important to note that these regular Social Security payments are separate from other checks distributed by the SSA, such as those for disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI payments, which assist individuals with severe disabilities that affect their income, are sent out at the beginning of each month on a different schedule.
