What Recipients Need to Know

Some recipients of Social Security disability and retirement benefits will receive an extra payment in November, with the first disbursement coming this week.

Who Will Receive Payments

Individuals collecting Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or those who have been receiving Social Security benefits since before May 1997 will see their payments arrive on Friday. Typically, those who receive both benefits get their SSI payment on the first of the month and their Social Security payment on the third. However, this month, these recipients will receive both checks at the same time.

Eligibility for SSI

Adults and children qualify for SSI if they have limited or no income or resources, have a disability, are blind, or are 65 years or older. According to the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA), approximately 7.4 million individuals receive SSI benefits.

Upcoming Second Payment

SSI recipients can expect a second check next month, scheduled for November 29. It’s important to note that this payment is not an additional disbursement; rather, it will count toward December’s allotment.

Payment Schedule Adjustments

SSI payments are typically issued on the first of each month. However, since December 1 falls on a Sunday, and the SSA does not process payments on weekends or federal holidays, they are moving the payment date up by a couple of days.

“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and ensure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to receive your payment,” the SSA explained in a blog post. “This adjustment does not indicate that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.”
