Two Bay Area Stays Make the Cut

As Halloween approaches, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has unveiled its picks for “America’s Most Haunted” hotels of 2024, and two Bay Area establishments have made the prestigious list.

The Claremont Club & Spa: A Luxurious Haunting

While guests may flock to the Claremont Club & Spa in Berkeley for its elegant rooms and breathtaking views, this 22-acre resort is also known for its eerie reputation. According to Historic Hotels of America, visitors have reported strange occurrences, including mysterious voices and ghostly lifts operating without explanation.

Particularly on the fourth floor, guests have shared unsettling experiences, such as feeling drastic temperature changes and discovering cold spots in their rooms. Among the tales, a ghostly 6-year-old girl is said to haunt the premises. Although some describe her presence as “peaceful,” it’s reported that she often reaches out at night, playfully saying “Hello” to unsuspecting visitors.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa: Wine Country Whispers

The second hotel on the list, the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, is a luxurious 5-star lodge nestled in California’s Wine Country, where a plethora of ghostly legends abound. Guests at this elegant establishment have claimed to feel a haunting presence during their stays, often reporting sensations of not being alone at night.

Visitors have described hearing doors slam unexpectedly and catching glimpses of shadowy figures darting down hallways. The Historic Hotels of America notes that The Round Room at the Fairmont may be the most frightening hotel room in the entire state. Those who have stayed in this room recount eerie sounds, flickering lights, and sensations of running water, contributing to its haunted reputation.

California’s Haunted Legacy

Historic Hotels of America also mentions the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego as another notable California hotel where guests may encounter strange happenings. With its rich history and ghostly lore, it adds to the allure of staying in a haunted hotel.

As Halloween festivities unfold, these Bay Area hotels invite both thrill-seekers and history buffs to experience the unique blend of luxury and the supernatural. Whether you’re hoping to spot a ghost or simply enjoy the spooky ambiance, these haunted hotels promise an unforgettable stay.
