Martin County is facing increased scrutiny due to a recent spike in violent crime, drawing significant attention from both local authorities and the community. This troubling trend has particularly concerned Sheriff William Snyder who has highlighted a marked increase in homicides this year.

Martin County Sees Sharp Increase in Homicides

“Over the past few years here in Martin County we have seen a perceptible increase in violent crime especially homicides,” Sheriff Snyder stated. The data supports his concern with the county experiencing nine homicides. This figure is more than double the four homicides recorded in both 2020 and 2021 and it is over four times higher than the two homicides reported in 2018.

Aggravated Assaults, Batteries, and Threats Join Homicides in Alarming Surge

The rise in homicides is not the only issue and there has also been a notable surge in other violent crimes. “We’re also seeing a good bit of aggravated assaults, aggravated batteries, and threats,” Snyder added. This broader increase in violent incidents has put the community on edge and prompted a call for action to address the underlying causes.

This alarming trend was underscored by a particularly violent weekend in Stuart. On Saturday morning, a teen in Jensen Beach was accidentally shot, marking the beginning of a series of violent events. Later, a man was shot in Indian River County, further adding to the weekend’s turmoil. The violence culminated in a tragic double homicide, where an elderly couple was shot and killed over a homeowners association dispute.
