South Carolina cities’ crime rates fluctuate which means that safety concerns should not be ignored. These cities have higher crime rates exceeding the national average.

Among the top 10 riskiest places in South Carolina cities are Orangeburg, Darlington, and Myrtle Beach. These cities are highlighted because of higher rates of violent and property crimes. However, these cities are making ways to ensure the safety of their residents and visitors.

The Most Horrific Crime in South Carolina’s History

Among South Carolina’s past is a crime that shook the nation. The Charleston Church Shooting occurred on June 17, 2015, within the walls of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The church is a historic institution in downtown Charleston. In a routine prayer service, a young white supremacist named Dylann Roof rained bullets upon the congregation. Nine innocent lives were lost which includes the church’s senior pastor and state senator, Clementa C. Pinckney.

Roof’s action was said to be fueled by racial hatred and supremacist ideology. His trial culminated in his conviction on 33 federal hate crime charges and subsequent death sentence.
