Using information from the FBI, RoadSnacks looked at crime rates in over 240 cities in Massachusetts. They found that while arson is a big issue, murders and serious assaults vary across different places.

1. Holyoke. For the past three years, Holyoke has unfortunately retained its title as the most dangerous city in Massachusetts. With a population of 40,002, residents face a staggering three times higher total crime rate compared to the state average. In 2020 alone, there was nearly one violent crime reported daily, with Holyoke ranking second in murder rates and 49th in reported rape cases statewide. Residents had a concerning 1 in 32 chance of becoming victims of property crimes. 2. Springfield. Springfield, known for being the birthplace of both Smith & Wesson and Dr. Seuss, presents a stark contrast as a city of both innovation and cultural significance. However, it’s the alarming side of Springfield’s high violent crime rate that’s gaining attention. With a population of 153,084, the city reported a staggering 966 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2020, the highest in Massachusetts. Tragically, Springfield witnessed 18 murders that year, ranking it sixth in the state for murder rates. Shockingly, it reported a high rate of property crimes, reaching 2,821 per 100,000 residents. Moreover, Hadley had the 59th highest rate of rape cases in the state, accounting for a significant portion of all violent crimes committed in the area over the year. 6. Brockton. Brockton, a city approximately 25 miles south of Boston, sadly holds the position of the sixth most dangerous place in Massachusetts.
