South Dakota is a state with a rich history and welcoming communities, but like any other US state, it has its share of crime. When traveling to South Dakota’s cities, there are safety tips to remember to fully enjoy the unique experience that this state has to offer.

10 Of The South Dakota’s Dangerous Cities

In the Mount Rushmore state, the 10 most dangerous cities in South Dakota are Rapid City, Chamberlain, Pierre, Yankton, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Box Elder, Aberdeen, Spearfish and Huron. Huron was pinpointed as the riskiest place according to a Southwest Journal report.

South Dakota crime rates were analyzed using the FBI’s most recent crime report for violent and property crime data. South Dakota has high arson rates, trailing murder and aggravated assault. Interestingly, the city with the highest number of assaults and murders has residents not more than 3000.

2 of South Dakota’s Terrible Crimes

According to Southwest Journal, South Dakota’s most terrible crime happened in 1994 when a Robert LeRoy Anderson was convicted of kidnapping and killing Larisa Dumansky and Piper Streyle. He was known as “The Duct Tape Killer”. His crimes are still remembered as the most chilling in the state.

Next is the Mathis Family Murders. John Mathis, the husband and father, was accused of killing his wife and two sons. However, the jury found him not guilty, and he walked free. This terrible crime is considered most infamous murder case in the state.
