With a population of 2,746,388, Chicago is a sprawling and vibrant city. Nonetheless, it grapples with elevated levels of violent crime, surpassing the US average by about 67%. Among the pressing concerns are gun violence, as well as various other forms of violent and property crimes.

Here’s a list of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago;

First on the list of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago is West Garfield Park. West Garfield, located on the South Side of Chicago and inhabited by 17,277 people, ranks as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago. It stands out for its extraordinarily high violent crime rate, with 3,371 incidents per 100,000 residents.

Crime rates here are a staggering 257% higher than the city’s average, resulting in residents facing a 1 in 20 chance of experiencing a violent crime. The area is particularly afflicted by gang-related violence, contributing to its status as Chicago’s most perilous neighborhood.

Next on the list, Washington Park. It has a population of 11,871, is another Chicago neighborhood grappling with substantial crime rates, earning its reputation as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago.

It faces a violent crime rate that is 701% above the national average, making it one of the city’s least safe areas. The overall crime rate here is 297% higher than the national average, and the neighborhood is plagued by high incidents of murder, robbery, and assault, creating a notably risky environment for its residents.

Lastly, Grand Crossing. Grand Crossing, located on Chicago’s South Side with a population of approximately 32,000, is among the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago. The neighborhood reports a violent crime rate of 2,679 per 100,000 people, significantly higher than the Chicago average of 943.

Property crime is also elevated at 5,519 per 100,000 people, surpassing the Chicago average of 2,983. Although the community is actively working towards revitalization, there remains a need for increased police presence, urging residents and pedestrians to exercise caution and vigilance for their safety, particularly during nighttime hours.
