After 15 years, DNA testing has identified the remains of 14-year-old Marcia Shirree Thomas.
After 15-Year Mystery, Teenager’s Identity Confirmed through DNA Testing
After nearly 15 years investigators have identified the remains of a young teen found fatally strangled and burned in an Irvine parking lot as 14-year-old Marcia Shirree Thomas. On September 5, 2009 workers discovered her partially burned body which led to a police investigation. Although DNA evidence was collected and it wasn’t until recently that Marcia’s identity was confirmed through testing, according to the report of True Crime Daily.

Brothers Convicted of Murder and Kidnapping
The case took a big turn when DNA linked two brothers Gabino Valdivia-Guzman and Zenaido Valdivia-Guzman, to the crime. Police say that on the night of September 4, 2009, Gabino convinced Marcia to get into his van. Zenaido, who was hiding in the back and then attacked her. Zenaido strangled Marcia and the brothers set her body on fire in the parking lot. They also stole her cellphone and ran away leaving her identity unknown for many years.
On November 5, 2010, the brothers were charged with murder and kidnapping. Recently, Zenaido was found guilty of first-degree murder and the special circumstance of murder during kidnapping. Gabino’s trial is still to come. The Irvine Police Department has been dedicated to solving this case and continues to support Marcia’s family through this tough time.
