Mount Vernon Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Stabbing Death of Sedro-Woolley Resident

The Olympian reported that a 30-year-old Mount Vernon man was given a 15-year prison term for the murder of a Sedro-Woolley resident. The Mount Vernon man named Oscar Rosales was found guilty on Friday of stabbing Nathan Lee Williams in April 2023. On July 5 Rosales entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder. Rosales was originally charged with first-degree murder, according to court records. Rosales received a 15-year sentence even though the typical range for second-degree murder was between 14 and 23 years. Prosecutor Branden Platter stated that a 15-year sentence gives the victim’s family closure while avoiding the hazards of a trial adding that a first-degree murder trial could have been difficult. He described Williams’ killing as a “brutal” act. Williams’ family members spoke at the sentencing. They shared how Williams a military veteran who served two tours in Iraq had struggled with health issues and had considered Rosales a friend. They expressed hope that Rosales would use his time in prison to improve himself. Despite their emotional statements Rosales did not address the court. His lawyer Emily Beschen spoke on his behalf expressing Rosales’ remorse for the pain caused to Williams’ family.

Judge Thomas Verge observed that Rosales did not display any visible emotion while Williams’ family spoke and criticized him for not addressing the court personally. The judge remarked that it was unclear if Rosales cared about the situation adding that having his lawyer speak for him did not hold much meaning for the family. In May Christy Llee Jones from Mount Vernon who was also involved in Williams’ death received a 13-year sentence for second-degree murder. Williams had been killed on April 1, 2023 near the Twin Bridges over the Swinomish Channel east of Anacortes. An autopsy revealed that he died from two stab wounds to the chest which caused him to bleed out rapidly. Additionally, he had defensive wounds on his forearm and other parts of his body. Investigators guided by surveillance footage from local businesses tracked down a Honda Odyssey in Mount Vernon where they found personal items linked to Rosales and Jones as well as blood. Both Rosales and Jones were arrested on April 17, 2023 and initially charged with first-degree murder.
