Lincoln Man Sentenced to Decades in Prison for Manslaughter

According to 6 News WOWT, in a tragic incident in downtown Lincoln a young Lincoln man has been sentenced to decades in prison for a fatal assault. Lancaster County Judge Matthew Mellor handed down the sentence to 23-year-old Lincoln man Angel Rodriguez Alvis. Alvis was found guilty of punching and killing a 55-year-old man named James Baylor. The incident happened on August 27, 2023. Prosecutors explained that Alvis punched Baylor near the intersection of 13th and P streets. The force of the punch caused Baylor to fall and hit his head on the ground resulting in a serious head injury. Baylor was rushed to the hospital immediately but sadly he died from his injuries on September 5. Less than an hour after the assault police officers arrested the Lincoln man. He was first charged with first-degree assault. However after Baylor passed away the charge was upgraded to manslaughter. In April Alvis decided to plead no contest to manslaughter abuse of a vulnerable adult and making terroristic threats. As part of a plea deal one of the first-degree assault charges was dropped. During the sentencing on Friday Judge Mellor sentenced Alvis to 23 to 26 years in prison. This sentence includes the 195 days Alvis had already spent in jail.
