District Man Gets 12-Year Sentence for Fatal Stabbing in Southeast Washington

A tragic incident in Southeast Washington D.C. has culminated in the sentencing of Michael Caldwell, 29, to 12 years of incarceration for the fatal stabbing of Damien Thompson on June 4, 2023. The altercation began as a verbal dispute, escalating when Mr. Thompson threw a bottle at Caldwell, leading to a heated argument on the street.

The situation took a dire turn when Mr. Thompson grabbed a plastic chair to throw at Caldwell, who then lunged at Mr. Thompson, inflicting a fatal stab wound to his face. As Mr. Thompson lay unconscious on the ground, Caldwell continued his assault, stabbing him eight more times in the chest. Tragically, Mr. Thompson succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward.

Following Caldwell’s guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter while armed on August 14, 2023, he was sentenced by the Honorable Maribeth Raffinan to 144 months in prison, along with five years of supervised release. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Pamela A. Smith. Both commended the efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in investigating and prosecuting the case.
