A high-speed police chase in Los Angeles took a shocking turn when a stolen Toyota Prius, the vehicle of the fleeing suspect, struck an elderly female pedestrian after officers executed a PIT maneuver to halt the pursuit.
Dramatic Chase Unfolds
The dramatic incident unfolded on Sepulveda Boulevard in Harbor City, with the allegedly stolen Prius disregarding traffic rules, running red lights, and even knocking down a signpost.
As the Prius approached an intersection between Vermont Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard, the police performed a PIT maneuver, causing the Prius to collide with 66-year-old Maria Salazar, who was crossing the road.
Despite the impact, Salazar, remarkably, sustained only bruises and managed to walk home unassisted with her shopping bags. She later expressed her concern, stating that the officers should have stopped due to the red light, as she had the right of way.
Suspect Apprehended
The Prius was allegedly stolen during a carjacking spree, and the suspect, attempting to flee from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, was arrested shortly after abandoning the vehicle on foot.
The Torrance Police Department reported that the carjacking and subsequent chase transpired within a brief four-minute window. Despite the suspect fleeing on foot after the collision, law enforcement swiftly apprehended him and transferred custody to the LASD.
