The Championship side has been investigating allegations against Phil Edwards, who allegedly took his own life in 2019 when he was accused of sexually abusing a young boy.
Phil Edwards was found dead weeks after being found guilty of having sex with a teen
Edwards worked at Watford in the 1990s, and possibly in the 1980s as well. Watford’s findings were released on Tuesday and added to an independent report on less recent child sexual abuse allegations in football to be released in 2021. An independent study found that between 1970 and 2005, English football was not effective enough to protect children from predatory coaches. An investigation led by lawyer Clive Sheldon listed eight clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, for failing to address concerns.
The English Football Association is now asking for its conclusions to be added to the report
Watford contacted 29 survivors, 18 of whom submitted signed reports. The report said Edwards “appeared to take pleasure in inflicting pain” and “laughed and screamed” when his victims cried. He told the players to squat naked and lie on the floor facing them. The survivor also said he spoke to his manager at the time, the late Graham Taylor, and other staff about the abuse. Both employees denied the existence of the conversation.
