Honduras Follows El Salvadoran Approach To Fighting Gangs

Observers said on Tuesday the crackdown on gangs in Honduras’ prisons was eerily similar to that of neighboring El Salvador by President Nayib Bukele last year.

On Monday, authorities forced inmates to sit half-naked in narrow rows as they searched some prisons for contraband

The prison sweep demonstrates the Honduran government’s determination to crack down on gangs following last week’s massacre of 46 gang-related inmates in the worst massacre at a women’s prison in the history of the country. Police said they were looking into the possibility that Saturday’s billiards hall shooting was linked to prison violence. Like the Salvadoran government Honduran police launched a prison raid on Monday that has released dramatic videos of tattooed prisoners walking like frogs, despite their lack of merit.

On Tuesday, the government released a video of police breaking down a high-pressure fence that a gang had erected in a town in northern Honduras to mark their territory. And as in El Salvador, two days of rigorous military-style searches in prisons in Honduras caused some surprises. During this massacre, prisoners of the Barrio 18 street gang smuggled guns, machetes, and flammable liquids. They overpowered the guards and broke into the cells where members of a rival gang lived.
