Police: Woman Hired To Clean Local Funeral Home Steals Almost $200,000 From Business

A local funeral home lost almost $200,000 due to a scam.

In July, the owner of John J. Gmiter Funeral Home in Pittsburgh’s South Side enlisted the services of a woman to clean the establishment, as per the police.

With the key in her possession, she had unrestricted access to the entire building, including the owner’s office, which housed important financial documents.

In December, the owner’s bank discovered that several significant deposits had been made into another bank.

Ellie/Eleanor Slagle received a total of $194,000 from five checks.

Residents of 15th Street are in disbelief upon learning the news. One woman, in particular, expressed her shock, describing the owner of the funeral home as the epitome of an ideal neighbor.

“He lets people park in his lot all the time. As you know, parking is an issue in the South Side. He’s the greatest guy,” she said. “He’s wonderful and the funeral home is wonderful. I think it’s a real shame that happened to him. That’s terrible.”

Slagle is currently facing multiple charges, which include felony theft and fraud.

A date for her next court appearance has yet to be scheduled.
