Upstate New York Resident Accidentally Shoots Himself in Hand

Hold on to your seats because the unbelievable story you’re about to dive into involves a convicted felon, three out-of-state residents, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officers, deer, and a near-amputation caused by a rifle. Brace yourself for the unexpected twists and turns ahead.

In November 2024, New York State DEC officers conducted an investigation into an alleged shooting incident in Washington County, as stated in a press release.

The initial report suggested the possibility of poaching. However, no deer were harmed in the incident. Instead, a man’s hand was accidentally shot while he was seated inside a vehicle.

On Saturday, November 30, 2024, three residents from Vermont crossed the border and entered New York through the town of Salem. Investigators found that this group had entered with the intention of hunting deer.

While on the hunt, the driver noticed a buck and made an initial attempt to shoot the animal from inside the vehicle. However, upon the arrival of a truck behind them, the driver quickly withdrew the firearm.

Unfortunately, during this action, the rifle accidentally discharged within the vehicle, resulting in a bullet passing through the driver’s hand and exiting through the door.

After the incident, the three individuals returned to Vermont to report what had happened. They initially claimed that the shooting occurred in Vermont. However, during the investigation, the shooter eventually admitted that the incident actually took place in New York.

The shooter, a convicted felon, was arrested by New York State officials after interviewing the three suspects. The charges against him include:

    • Criminal possession of a weapon
    • Hunting without a license
    • Possession of a loaded gun in a motor vehicle
    • Discharging a firearm over a highway
    • Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a farm structure

After sustaining injuries, the shooter underwent a five-day recovery period at Albany Medical Center. As for the other two individuals involved in the incident, they were issued a total of seven tickets in relation to the shooting.
