Port Police identify driver of truck retrieved from Galveston Harbor

Port of Galveston Police have identified the man whose body was found in a submerged vehicle in Galveston Harbor on Friday morning.

Cameron Sharman, a 32-year-old resident of La Marque, was found inside the cab of a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup.

The truck was captured on port security video as it drove from Pier 20 into the water at 2:14 a.m., as confirmed by the police. Pier 20, a public-accessible working pier situated in a commercial section of the port, serves as the starting point for this extraordinary incident.

Police received a call around 11:30 a.m. about a potential submerged vehicle, prompted by reports of a broken wooden railing on the pier.

The police initiated an investigation after reviewing the security footage, which clearly captured the pickup truck entering the water.

Before noon, a patrol boat from the port police was summoned to the location and utilized sonar technology to locate the vehicle, which was submerged 29 feet below the surface.

It was unclear if anyone was in the cab until the truck was brought to the surface, as the poor visibility in the water made it difficult to determine.

The authorities retrieved the pickup truck from the water around 7 p.m. on Friday. It is suspected that Sherman was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time it entered the water.

Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death and gather more information about the incident. If you have any details or information that could assist in this investigation, please contact the Port of Galveston Police Department at (409) 766-6169.
