A woman was fatally injured in a Kansas City apartment early Thursday morning following a physical altercation, according to police.
Officers were dispatched just before 4 a.m. to the 900 block of East 134th Street for a welfare check. Upon arrival, they found signs of a disturbance and discovered the woman unresponsive with injuries. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the woman and a man had been involved in an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation. Police spokeswoman Officer Alayna Gonzalez confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody for further questioning.
Authorities were able to locate the suspect with assistance from the public and nearby police departments. As of Thursday morning, no additional suspects were being sought.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to gather evidence and witness statements. The extent of the victim’s injuries and the exact cause of death have not been disclosed. The woman’s identity has not yet been released.
This marks Kansas City’s 145th homicide of 2024, according to data from The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 182 homicides.
