On Christmas Eve, a surprising and concerning incident took place near St. Joseph’s Church in Penfield, leaving parishioners taken aback.

Over a dozen cars were targeted by thieves, resulting in the theft of a 2019 silver Kia Sorento with Virginia license plates. The incident occurred at the Cobbles Elementary School parking lot, where churchgoers had parked their vehicles for the Christmas Eve Mass.

Parishioners were filled with disbelief.

According to Mark Elsaesser, a long-time parishioner, the church has always been considered a safe place. He expressed his shock at the incident, stating that in all the years he and his wife have been attending the church, they have never witnessed anything like this before, especially during the holiday season.

The church holds special significance for them, as they got married there and had their daughter baptized. This unexpected event has left them deeply unsettled.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the case and has not identified any suspects at this time.

Residents are strongly advised to ensure that their vehicles are securely locked and to keep valuable items hidden from plain sight. If anyone has any information regarding this matter, it is highly recommended that they contact emergency services by dialing 911.
