Mississippi authorities announced on Wednesday that they have successfully apprehended a convicted killer, Drew Johnson, who had escaped from prison. This comes following a public warning issued the previous day, where officials described Johnson as both “desperate” and “very dangerous.”
Johnson was apprehended in the vicinity of the South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI), where he had escaped on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections. SMCI is situated near the town of Leakesville.
The George County Sheriff’s Office issued a cautionary message on Facebook, urging the public to exercise caution. They emphasized the need for vigilance and emphasized that the individual in question is likely to be desperate and extremely dangerous.
The post also advised people to reach out to their families, send them messages, and ensure they receive responses. The Sheriff’s Office highlighted the tendency for people to be more generous during Christmas and potentially lower their guard, further emphasizing the importance of remaining vigilant and careful.
In February 2022, Johnson was found guilty of homicide/murder in Rankin County, Mississippi, and he received a life sentence.
In 2022, the District Attorney’s Office in Shelby County, Tennessee, stated that Johnson had pleaded guilty to various crimes in Shelby County.
These crimes included the stabbing death of a man in 2016, whose body was discovered in southwest Memphis, as well as the attempted murder of a fellow inmate while Johnson was awaiting trial in the Mississippi case.
