Former Kansas physician indicted on federal charges connected to 1989 rape case

A former Kansas doctor, Frederick Louis Tanzer, who currently resides in Ohio, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on Friday. The indictment consists of six counts and is based on DNA evidence that links Tanzer to a rape case dating back to 1989.

Tanzer allegedly deceived federal investigators by denying any knowledge or contact with the victim during the time of the rape incident. He is facing four counts of providing false information to a federal agency or officer and two counts of fabricating or employing a fraudulent document or writing.

Each charge has the potential for a maximum prison sentence of five years. It’s important to note that federal offenses can still be pursued, regardless of whether the primary offense has surpassed the statute of limitations.

Dr. Tanzer, a medical doctor, has resided and worked in Ohio, Kansas, and Colorado. The Kansas Board of Healing Arts confirms that he obtained his medical license in 2015 and it was subsequently renewed in 2024.

While he is identified as a hospitalist at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, his biography on the hospital’s website appears to be unavailable.

During the execution of a search warrant at Tanzer’s residence in Sycamore Township, Ohio on December 11, authorities discovered various items in Tanzer’s dresser. These included restraints, a gag, a black hat, and zip ties.
