BEAVERTON, Ore. (TCN) — A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his neighbor, a 32-year-old nurse who disappeared last week under suspicious circumstances.
On the morning of Sept. 4, Beaverton Police Department officers conducted a welfare check at Melissa Jubane’s apartment because her family, friends, and co-workers became concerned when she failed to show up for her shift at St. Vincent Hospital. Officers spoke with staff at her apartment building and entered her residence, but she wasn’t there. Police said her “absence without communication was deemed unusual and alarming.”
Jubane’s phone was turned off and she did not have any recent activity on her credit cards.
That afternoon, police entered her into a national missing persons database. Beaverton Police confirmed Sept. 7 that Jubane was found deceased.
Police allege Jubane’s neighbor, Bryce Schubert, played a role in her disappearance. He was arrested Sept. 7. Court records show he is being charged with second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and abuse of a corpse.
One of her former professors told KOIN-TV, “Everybody loved her.” She was described as being “the sweetest, sweetest young woman.”
The University of Portland dean of nursing, Joane Moceri, called Jubane’s killing “a loss for all of us.”
KHON-TV reports Jubane and her longtime boyfriend wed on Aug. 24 in Oahu. They arrived back in Oregon on Sept. 1 and had the day off for Labor Day on Sept. 2. Jubane worked on Tuesday, then went missing. Her husband is reportedly in the U.S. Navy and is stationed in Washington state.
Beaverton Police did not reveal a cause of death.
