The holdout is officially over. San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams is ending his holdout and returning to the team on a contract extension, according to his agency.
Williams, an 11-time All-Pro, had been out for the entire offseason as he seeked a new deal with more guaranteed money, staying away from the facility and accruing fines during the process. Ultimately, he remains with the 49ers and gets a deal done before Week 1, filling a massive void for the team.
Williams’s new deal comes on the heels of Brandon Aiyuk’s four-year, $120 million extension that was finalized and signed last week, keeping the star receiver in San Francisco for the foreseeable future. Now, the 49ers are adding to their strong track record of getting extensions done with their players, as Trent Williams is the latest to join the group.
It’s currently unclear whether Williams is signing a new extension or a reworked deal, as the offensive tackle still has three years remaining on his deal, but no guaranteed money heading into his age-36 season. But, however the deal may be structured, it is expected that Williams will get a top-of-the-market contract that pays him well with guaranteed money.
Now, the biggest question is: will he be ready for Week 1?
Williams hasn’t practiced with the team all offseason, but has likely been staying in shape and training. However, the 49ers have looked for insurance as well, signing offensive tackle Brandon Parker to the active roster on Monday, while backup Jaylon Moore is still there after playing as the top left tackle for the entire offseason.
He’ll get a few practices back with the team prior to Monday’s Week 1 kickoff against the New York Jets, but the 49ers wouldn’t want to risk injury to one of their elite players this early in the season if they didn’t feel he was fully back in shape.
The same goes for wideout Brandon Aiyuk, who probably plays in some capacity, but it’s unsure to what extent as he just returned to the fold as well. However, Aiyuk has been around the building much this offseason, so the 49ers may have a good sense of where he’s at conditioning-wise.
Nonetheless, the 49ers have now added both Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams back into the fold, and it seems they’re locked and loaded for the season.
