Late last week, San Francisco 49ers rookie safety Malik Mustapha posed the question of whether he should change his jersey number before the start of the regular season, which begins this week.
He’s not the only rookie making a change. Per The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, Mustapha is one of four rookies who received a makeover:
CB Renardo Green, 0
S Malik Mustapha, 6
WR Jacob Cowing, 19
RB Isaac Guerendo, 31
Malik must’ve loved the idea of him wearing a single-digit jersey. He will take over the number previously worn by Danny Gray.
Green was a dark horse candidate for No. 0. He switched from No. 31 and was a winner before the season started.
Cowing takes over Trent Taylor’s old jersey. Taylor, who is on the practice squad, will now wear No. 81. Newly signed Terrace Marshall, who is also on the practice squad, will wear No. 84.
Guerendo takes over Green’s old number as his career skyrockets after ditching No. 49. No skill player on the planet should have to don such a number.
