POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (TCN) — A 32-year-old man is in custody after allegedly fatally hitting the mother of his son with his truck and injuring another man.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, on the night of Saturday, Sept. 21, deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel responded to a possible hit-and-run. Authorities found two victims, Brenda Hernandez Amaya and Omar Munguia-Henrique, and determined they had been hit and dragged by a vehicle.
Responders transported the victims to a hospital, where Hernandez Amaya was pronounced deceased. Munguia-Henrique sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Upon further investigation, detectives with the sheriff’s office determined Hernandez Amaya and 32-year-old Edwin Amaya got into an argument over their shared child. Deputies allege that at some point, Amaya went to his Ford F-250, “backed up the vehicle, and then intentionally put it into drive and struck Hernandez Amaya with the front of his truck.” He reportedly crashed into parked cars while the other victim, Munguia-Henrique, attempted to hold on to the car, but he fell to the ground. Following the incident, Amaya fled on foot.
According to WPLG-TV, Hernandez Amaya shared a son with Amaya and had two children with Munguia-Henrique. The children reportedly witnessed the incident. WPLG reports that Munguia-Henrique alleged Amaya was drunk and threatened to shoot everyone.
Deputies found Amaya on South Dixie Highway shortly after the hit-and-run and took him into custody. He remains held in the Broward County Jail on one count of premeditated murder.
