The San Francisco 49ers officially ruled George Kittle out for the team’s Week 3 contest against the Los Angeles Rams.
On Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked to describe the severity of Kittle’s injury:
“Him and Charvarius [Ward] were sore after practice like a number of guys are. They came in Thursday morning and were still sore. And it was still today with Kittle. So that’s the severity of it.”
Eric Saubert will have a bigger role in Kittle’s absence. Shanahan said that Saubert had done a “hell of a job” and stepped in well when called upon. He compared Saubert Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner and lauded Saubert for his consistency: “He’s blocked very well, and every time his number is called, he usually makes a play.”
Tight end Brayden Willis was elevated from the practice squad. He figures to have a bigger role on special teams as Saubert sees an uptick in snaps on offense.
Edge rusher Sam Okuayinonu was also elevated from the practice squad.
