The moves keep coming for the San Francisco 49ers. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that wide receiver Tay Martin was released from the practice squad. He had been with the team since 2022. Martin was more of a jack-of-all-trades as opposed to a master of any specific one.
The other receivers on the practice squad are now Trent Taylor, who provides value as a returner and can replicate ‘the other team’s slot receiver. There’s also Terrace Marshall, who is the Niners reclamation project for this season.
Kyle’s update, 10:36 a.m. PT: The 49ers corresponding move was to sign LB DeShaun White to the practice squad. White signed with the Buffalo Bills after the 2024 NFL Draft. He was with the Bills and the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024 before Las Vegas released him on August 27.
Marshall and Martin have similar traits, but Marshall has the higher upside and wins over the middle of the field, which is where the 49ers want to target wideouts.
Ronnie Bell is on the active roster, but he will likely play a big part this season on the practice squad and help out on scout team. The same is true for Chris Conley.
Here’s a look at the 49ers receiver room after Martin’s release:
