It’s officially game week. The San Francisco 49ers have the day off but will return to practice on Tuesday.
Per The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, the Niners made three moves on Monday morning. The team brought back edge rusher Sam Okuayinonu to the practice squad.
He played 65 snaps during the preseason, finishing with a sack and a run stop. The 6’1, 269-pounder was an undrafted free agent out of the University of Maryland in 2022. It’s not far-fetched to think Okuayinonu has a chance to be on the active roster early in the season, especially if Yetur Gross-Matos misses Week 1.
To make room for Okuayinonu, the 49ers released Sebastian Gutierrez from the practice squad. Gutierrez played 84 snaps this preseason at left tackle. The 49ers demand a specific demeanor from their tackles in the run game. I’m not sure Gutierrez lived up to that profile.
The final move was to waive safety Tayler Hawkins from the Injured Reserve. Hawkins was a Steve Wilks favorite.
