Teen Discovers Mother’s Body in Grisly Edison Stabbing; Suspect Apprehended

On Sunday July 21 a terrible event occurred in Edison, New Jersey when a 37-year-old man was accused of killing a woman by stabbing her. The Edison Police Department responded to an emergency call regarding a stabbing at a nearby residence, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. When the police arrived they found the death of Lizbeth Benitez-Rivera 37 who had been stabbed many times. Emergency personnel tried their best but she was declared dead at the site. The situation took a heartbreaking turn when Benitez-Rivera’s 16-year-old son woke up that afternoon and found his mother’s body. The shock and distress of such a discovery have been profound for the young man who is now dealing with the aftermath of this traumatic event. Following the initial investigation authorities identified Joan Polanco as a suspect. Joan Polanco also 37 years old was reportedly seen entering Benitez-Rivera’s bedroom with a knife and then leaving the residence shortly after the stabbing occurred.

According to True Crime News, police were able to locate Joan Polanco in New York City in the hours that followed the event. He was taken into custody by the New York City Police Department and is currently being charged with major offenses. Joan Polanco faces two charges: third-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and first-degree murder which carries serious legal ramifications. The seriousness of the offense and the weapon used are reflected in these charges. Although they haven’t revealed the details of their relationship investigators have hinted that Joan Polanco and Benitez-Rivera were acquainted. This particular element has complicated the case by casting doubt on the purpose of the stabbing. While the investigation by the authorities continues further details can become available as the case develops. Joan Polanco is presently awaiting extradition to New Jersey where he will appear in court to answer to the crimes leveled against him.
