Judge Halts Austin’s Waterfront Redevelopment Plan Over $354 Million Dispute
Austin’s Waterfront Redevelopment Plan Stalled by Judge Amid Legal Battle
According to the news report of Audacy, Austin’s big waterfront redevelopment plan to fix up an area by Lady Bird Lake hit a snag. A judge stopped the city’s idea to use extra tax money to help with the waterfront redevelopment plan. Some Americans sued the city saying the plan broke the rules. The city wanted to spruce up the South Central Waterfront District including part of an old newspaper building. They planned to use $354 million in taxes over many years for roads and stuff but the Americans suing said the city didn’t prove it really needed public money to make the area better.
The city is bummed about the judge‘s decision but they say they can still try other ways to improve the waterfront but for now it’s not clear what will happen next with this big plan.

Furthermore, the Americans who went to court led by Bill Bunch, Bill Aleshire, and Fred Lewis said the city didn’t follow the rules. They said the city had to prove that the area was in bad shape and wouldn’t get better without help from taxpayers but they said the city didn’t do that. The city said they’re sad about the judge‘s decision. They’ll check out what it means and what they can do next. They also said this doesn’t stop them from trying other ideas to fix up the waterfront.
