USDA Steps In: SNAP/CalFresh Benefits for Winter Storm-Affected California Households
Automatic Replacements for SNAP Benefits in 12 California Counties After Severe Outages
Replaced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/CalFresh benefits may now be available to households affected by the disruptions after major power outages caused by severe winter storms throughout California beginning on March 1. The project was announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) with the intention of helping the impacted residents who had lost food as a result of the outages. The USDA permitted automatic mass replacements for SNAP households in certain zip codes in 12 counties, including El Dorado, Humboldt, Mendocino, and others, in place of demanding individual reports of food losses. The California Department of Social Services will furnish information regarding eligibility and the process of obtaining replacement benefits (CDSS).

USDA Extends Provisional Waiver for San Diego County SNAP/CalFresh Recipients: Hot Meal Purchases Allowed Until 2024
Apart from the substitute benefits, the USDA granted a provisional waiver extension that permits SNAP/CalFresh recipients in San Diego County to use their benefits for hot meal purchases until April 10, 2024. This extension is a reaction to the region’s severe storms and flooding. SNAP benefits may now be exchanged for hot foods at retail food outlets licensed by the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) in San Diego County. This is a shift from the customary prohibition on exchanging SNAP benefits for hot foods. In order to help program members impacted by power outages, FNS is prepared to accept further waivers. Those interested in learning more should visit the California Department of Social Services website or dial 2-1-1 for options and help with SNAP benefits.
