Attorney General Lisa Monaco Takes the Helm Temporarily as Attorney General Merrick Garland Undergoes Scheduled Surgery

On Saturday, Garland, 71, will undergo a “minimally invasive,” 90-minute surgery under general anesthesia.

Public Affairs Director Xochitl Hinojosa said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco will take over temporarily before, during, and after the procedure to allow for general anesthesia recovery. This deliberate transition secures the Justice Department’s operation during Attorney General Merrick Garland’s absence.

As shown by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s congressional investigation for delaying the disclosure of his prostate cancer treatment-related hospitalization, government officials are sensitive to health issues. This contrasts with Garland’s transparent distribution of duties during his scheduled medical treatment.
