A Look at Alaska’s 10 Most Dangerous Cities in 2023

Anchorage, Alaska’s most populous city with 288,121 in 2021, leads the list. Anchorage has a violent crime rate of 11.40 per 1,000 population, higher than state and national averages, notwithstanding its All-American City Award. The city has 34.55 property crimes per 1,000 residents, indicating safety concerns.

Property crime in Juneau, the state capital, is 25% higher than the Alaskan average. Downtown and Lemon Creek are unsafe, contributing to an 8.69 violent crime rate per 1,000 residents.

Bethel, on the Kuskokwim River, has one of the state’s highest violent crime rates, 14.00 per 1,000. Bethel’s crime rate is over 5% higher than the national average despite its tiny size.

Fairbanks, Alaska’s largest interior city with 32,702, has a property crime rate double the national average. The violent crime rate is below the state average, but downtown residents and visitors should be careful.

Wasilla, Alaska’s fourth most populated city, and Kodiak, Kodiak Island’s commercial port and principal city, are examined in the paper. These cities have higher crime rates than state and national averages despite their distinct characteristics.

All four remaining cities—North Pole, Kenai, Ketchikan, and Sitka—present safety risks. The festive charm of North Pole, the coastal appeal of Kenai, the “Salmon Capital of the World” of Ketchikan, and the southern splendor of Sitka all have crime rates that need attention.
