Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office charged Stephen Wells 68-year-old from Pinetops with three counts of misdemeanor sexual battery, and one count of felony indecent liberties with a child.

The sheriff’s office and Edgecombe County Public Schools stated that earlier this month first report of the crime there were more victims had come forward. The Investigation Started In September

The WITN reported that the investigation began on September 8th when deputies said they were told by the principal of South Edgecombe Middle School of an alleged sexual assault on September 7th. They were told a detective responded and learned that Wells had touched a 14-year-old student. The child was interviewed and deputies said that she caught Wells touching two more students.

CBS17 reported that the Deputies said the parents of the 12 and 13-year-olds were told and that the children were later questioned regarding the incident. Investigators said the children confirmed the inappropriate touching by Wells.

Detective Shavon Shaw said that the crimes occurred on a school bus and she said that it’s her understanding that Wells was with the school system between 7 and 10 years.

Wells was arrested on the original charges and given a $40,000 secured bond.

Edgecombe County Public Schools says that Wells was fired from his position as a custodian and bus driver for the system on September 11th.
