At 6:18 am local time, the Twin Cities in Motion organization made the decision to cancel the running activities planned for Sunday in Minneapolis due to EAS Black Flag weather conditions even though the Minnesota marathon race was set to begin at 8 am.

With an air quality index of 63, Minneapolis is expected to reach a peak temperature of 89 degrees.

If accurate, Accuweather reports that it would surpass the daily record temperature set in 1897.

The inability to host the Minnesota marathon races that runners have been looking toward for months saddens Twin Cities in Motion and the partners but the well being of participants and the surrounding area will always be the top priority, Minnesota marathon race organizers stated in a release.

Unexpected cancellation of the Minnesota marathon

Heat waves can put a strain on both runners and the emergency medical response systems. The organizers of the Minnesota marathon said that they make a plea to the entire running community to come together for everyone’s safety.

The organizers stated that a decision would be made by Thursday regarding who might be given credit for the Minnesota marathon’s cancellation.

Runners who were supposed to participate in the Minnesota marathon on Sunday expressed their rage at the cancellation on social media.

Some participants in the Minnesota Marathon told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that they planned to at least jog on Sunday to make up for a small amount of the scheduled event.
