A statement about an officer impersonation scam was released by the Roanoke Police Department on Friday.

The public is being alerted by the Roanoke Police Department about a scam involving people impersonating as officers of Roanoke Police Department.

Officers claim that the scam involves a caller who claims to be a Roanoke Police Department officer and informs them that they have missed court or that an arrest warrant has been issued for them.

Roanoke Police Department: Be vigilant for scammers impersonating officers.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, the scammer will request money from the victim in exchange for gift cards that will be sent to a certain address.

According to Roanoke Police Department, no officer will ever demand payment in person or over the phone. 

The Roanoke Police Department warns the general public not to transmit money to strangers or give out personal information over the phone.
