Tropical Storm Ophelia Moves To The East Coast, Bringing Dangerous Impact To Major Cities (Photo: Yahoo News)

After Tropical Storm Ophelia made landfall Saturday near a North Carolina barrier island,  unleashing rain, destructive winds and life threatening surges, residents in several coastal areas of North Carolina and Virginia encountered flooding.

The Tropical Storm Ophelia is predicted to have an impact on major towns like Washington, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York, according to forecasters.

Tropical Storm Ophelia had winds that might reach 40 mph with greater gusts on Saturday afternoon and some coastal towns were receiving several inches of flooding.

On Friday, the governors of Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina announced states of emergency. Some schools had early dismissals as people got ready for the Tropical Storm Ophelia.

Tropical Storm Ophelia is expected to travel north passing across the states of Delaware, Virginia, Southeast Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, southern New Jersey and Maryland as it moves over land. 

The Tropical Storm Ophelia’s effects will be more widespread because Massachusetts in the north could experience rain.

Tropical Storm Ophelia will weaken when it crosses land on Saturday and Sunday, according to AccuWeather experts, but there will still be a high risk of flooding and storm surge in some regions. 

By Monday morning, the Tropical Storm Ophelia is anticipated to move away from the New Jersey coast and re enter the Atlantic Ocean.

Compared to Hurricane Lee which passed offshore last week, the Tropical Storm Ophelia’s effects will be felt across more states since it is predicted to cover such a large area of land according to AccuWeather.

As the Tropical Storm Ophelia passes into the eastern US, it is predicted to be downgraded to a tropical depression.
