A white mother is taking legal action against Southwest Airlines, filing a Southwest Airlines lawsuit accusing the airline of engaging in “blatant racism” after she and her mixed-race daughter were stopped and questioned by police officers at the airport on suspicion of human trafficking, as reported by CBS News.

What Leads to the Southwest Airlines Lawsuit?
Mary MacCarthy and her daughter, residents of California, traveled to Denver in October 2021 to attend a funeral following the sudden death of MacCarthy’s older brother. Upon landing at the airport, they were met by two armed officers from the Denver Police Department, who informed them that they were being questioned based on a report from a Southwest Airlines employee who deemed them suspicious and potentially involved in human trafficking.
The Southwest Airlines lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, details the distressing encounter that left both MacCarthy and her daughter in tears. The officers eventually let them go after MacCarthy explained the purpose of their travel and provided identification.
MacCarthy alleges that the Southwest Airlines lawsuit and the incident caused both her and her daughter “extreme emotional distress.” In response, she filed the Southwest Airlines lawsuit seeking economic damages, compensatory damages, as well as punitive and exemplary damages from Southwest Airlines.
