According to Sabes, John McLean, one of the onlookers who sprung into action and rushed into the waters to rescue the teenager, was reading a newspaper when he heard screams nearby. McLean stated that two teenagers were drowning and that he immediately responded to them with another onlooker, Fernando Agurto.
The teenager who was removed from the water was reportedly conscious and responsive. However, upon being rescued, McLean stated that the teenager appeared like he was “ready to drown”.

Unfortunately, an article in CBS News states that apart from the male teenager who was rescued, a 15-year-old missing teenager was swept away by the waters. After McLean and Agurto were able to rescue the first teenager, they went out to get the missing teenager as well, but they have already lost sight of him. Nonetheless, to date, a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department stated that a search for the missing teenager is still ongoing.
