The U.S. administration allocated $50 million to launch the Persistent Poverty Initiative. Reports say the program intends to alleviate the effects of poverty on cancer in areas that earn low incomes.

On June 26, the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris awarded a $50 million fund to launch the Persistent Poverty Initiative. Reports say the program intends to alleviate the effects of poverty on cancer in areas that earn low incomes.

Furthermore, according to O’Connor, the Persistent Poverty Initiative plans to establish research capacity, encourage research on cancer prevention, and implement community-based programs. The Persistent Poverty Initiative will reportedly be the first major program to undertake the effects of poverty on cancer.

Persistent Poverty Initiative

An article in the National Institutes of Health states that the $50 million fund will support the establishment of five Centers for Cancer Control Research in persistent poverty areas to promote the fundamental priorities of the Administration’s Cancer Moonshot. In addition, the Persistent Poverty Initiative will pursue the decrease in the structural drivers of cancer, reduce the use of tobacco, and ensure that individuals will have access to healthy food.
